Expats stranded for Xmas as snow chaos hits Europe

Harriet Sinclair, December 19th, 2010

Expats flying home for Christmas face the prospect of being stranded in the UAE, as severe weather causes travel chaos across Europe.

The adverse conditions — which have seen more than 100 flights across the continent cancelled and airports shut down— are predicated to last until after Christmas.

UK airports Heathrow and Gatwick closed yesterday following warnings of heavy snow, and airports in France, Spain, Germany, the Netherlands, and Denmark reported flight cancellations and delays.

Emirates flights to the UK are currently still taking off, though there have been reports that one flight so far has been delayed.

Cities across the continent reported varying degrees of snowfall; Paris experienced its second highest snowfall since 1987, while Britain experienced the most widespread heavy snow it has seen since 1965.
