Ronai day one omelette challenge time to beat 1:32

Hotelier Middle East Staff, February 27th, 2011

The time to beat at Ronai’s omelette challenge hosted by celebrity chef Brian Turner is one minute and thirty two seconds.

Held at stand D2-2 in Hall 2 at Gulfood at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre, all you have to do is sign up and cook a three-egg omelette as quickly as possible.

“At the moment the time to beat is one minute 32 and I’m sure someone will beat it,” said Turner.

“The record in the UK is 17 seconds but I’m not sure we’re going to beat that. The omelettes vary in quality, but I have seen some rubbish turned out in the UK so it’s a nice standard.”

But while the competition is fun prizes — will be awarded including signed books from Brian Turner, dinner vouchers from Wafi Hospitality, six piece crockery sets from Steelite International and dinner vouchers from Fibber Magees — there was a more serious point.

“People don’t get trained to make omelettes anymore and it’s a classic and it’s part of the problem today in the industry,” Turner asserted.

“The real classical skills we were made to learn as young people are not been taught as much these days, because everything in the UK is bought filleted, prepped and organised, which saves costs, but the youngsters don’t get to use their knives and work as much as they could do. The same applies to the omelette, you can see that some people haven’t made them on a regular basis, but when I was a lad that was your job until you could do it in your sleep and that’s developing basic skills”.

Turner promotes Steelite which is represented in the region by Ronai, two company’s he says he thoroughly enjoys working with.

“Steelite plates and crockery are the framework to what we do — if we put what we do on a paper plate it’s fine, but if you put it on a really nice plate and design it looks even better. I have been working with Steelite for a few years promoting their products because I like the stuff they do; it’s good stuff and Gavin (Gavin Dodd managing director A.Ronai) does a great job at Ronai and we get on extremely well so its suits me and works well for me.”
