Inaugural Qatar GM Debate on Tuesday

Hotelier Middle East Staff, April 17th, 2011

The first ever Hotelier Middle East Qatar GM Debate, being held this Tuesday at Grand Hyatt Doha, will be attended by nearly 100 hoteliers.

The Qatar GM Debate is ideally timed to enable hoteliers to come together to discuss challenges and opportunities facing the hotel business in Qatar following the country’s successful World Cup 2022 bid, announced at the end of last year.

The event will open with a keynote address from Qatar Tourism Authority, which will lead straight into a session delivered by Viability Management Consultants partner and general manager Guy Wilkinson entitled ‘Fifa World Cup analysis: making the bid count’.

Wilkinson commented: “The timing of this event really couldn’t be more apt, coming just a few months after the news that Qatar will be hosting the 2022 World Cup.

“The promise of adequate hotel accommodation being made available was a key to Qatar’s successful bid to host the tournament, but involved the government and by association, the private sector taking on a huge commitment to increase the national inventory to 90,000 rooms — all this, at a time when the spectre of oversupply is already looming over the country’s hotel market.

“Evidently, there is much work to be done and much discussion also, making the Qatar GM’s Debate the perfect forum for these issues to be aired,” said Wilkinson.

Following Wilkinson’s presentation, the issues will be debated by a prestigious panel set to discuss “World Cup 2022 — a game changer for the tourism industry”.

The Qatar GM Debate will feature five further panel discussions tackling issues such as strategies for a smooth opening, reservation and booking trends, revenue management, developing hotel F&B concepts and driving savings through sustainability.
