Sofitel has relaxed its strict dress code for female staff at the hotel where former IMF boss Dominique Strauss-Kahn allegedly sexually assaulted a chambermaid.
According to a report in The Times, female staff are now being allowed to wear trousers instead of skirts after a protest from employees.
A union official said the chain made the concession amid concern about the vulnerability of chambermaids in the wake of the claims of the 32-year-old housekeeper, who said Strauss-Kahn attacked her when she went to clean his room.
The decision on the uniforms comes days after New York assemblyman Rory Lancman called for legislation that would ensure maids were equipped with panic buttons.
Strauss-Kahn was indicted on multiple charges including attempted rape and sexual abuse.
He posted US $1 million cash bail and a $5 million insurance bond and is under house arrest in Manhattan.
