Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority has launched its purpose-built Destination Village on the Corniche in time for its two-week hosting of the Volvo Ocean Race fleet.
The village opened on Saturday December 31; and features entertainment; dhow building displays; and Souk Al Mamsha where visitors can buy traditional crafts. It is open every day from 11am until 11pm.
“The entertainment programme is dotted with activities which are educational as well as entertaining and people will leave knowing far more about Abu Dhabi’s maritime and watersports credentials than they did before,” said Faisal Al Sheikh, Events Manager, ADTA.
“When we began our Volvo Ocean Race hosting campaign we promised a stand-out stopover and we believe we have fulfilled that commitment, he added. "This is not just for sailors or would-be sailors but for families who want to get out into the fresh air and have fun alongside thousands of others. There will, however, be opportunities for all to try their hand at sailing and to find out more about this great sport. The atmosphere will be electric and the best news yet is that all the entertainment is free!”
Visitors will be able to win prizes at a ‘Hole in One Challenge’ run by the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship. Those who make the ‘ace’ shot go into a weekly draw to win a holiday of a life-time to join the race fleet in either Sanya, China or Galway, Ireland.
Two grand prizes are also up for grabs including two economy return tickets to either stopover on Etihad Airways, four nights luxury bed and breakfast accommodation; limousine airport transfers as well as on and off water hospitality to enjoy all the Volvo Ocean Race action.
