New zoo planned for Dubai

Dubai Municipality's plans to create a new zoo in the emirate are underway after appointing a consultant and action team.

The new zoo will see a traditional cage system being implemented, and will replace the old zoo, which was established in 1967 by Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum.

The team are still finalising the concept, including prospective sites, distribution of animals and the amount of land needed.

Hussain Nasser Lootah, director general of Dubai Municipality, said: “The current zoo should be improved, as it is very old and small after the huge development around it and increasing number of animals and visitors.”

“A fully-fledged team of specialists, veterinarians, animal curators and entire qualified cadres for animal welfare according to the global systems and frame lines will be available,” he added.
