Gas safety experts urge review in MidEast kitchens

James Clarey, July 2nd, 2012

British gas safety firm S&S Northern has urged Middle East catering managers to do more to prevent safety risks in commercial kitchens.

Steve McMahon, managing director of S&S Northern, told Caterer Middle East that following a number of issues with staff being taken ill due to gas poisoning in Britain, a gas interlock system has now become standard.

The gas interlock systems ensure that if a ventilation system is not in operation, gas cannot be used, “so if the kitchen fans are turned off or fail the gas solenoid valve automatically closes and gas cannot be reintroduced until the fans are turned back on”.

He added: “It is vital that Middle Eastern kitchen owners and managers understand the impact that an unhealthy working environment can have and adopt good gas safety standards so that they can be sure that their staff are protected and that their business can continue to run effectively”.

S&S Northern has supplied thousands of gas interlock systems across the UK, to commercial kitchens in venues such as the Palace of Westminster, Wembley Arena and Old Trafford cricket ground.
