Abhishek Kumar, executive sous chef at The Baywatch Village, Le Méridien Al Aqah Beach Resort, Fujairah has won the title of Sous Chef of the Year, sponsored by MLA, at the Caterer Middle East Awards 2012.

Shortlisted in the category were Ajeesh Alphonse, junior sous chef, The MED, Media One, Dubai, Cinu Chandran, sous chef, West 14th, Dubai and Novy Roxas, sous chef, The Address, Dubai Marina.

Dimple Sharma, sous chef, banqueting and conventions Atlantis The Palm Dubai was also highly commended for her “dedication, love and passion for food,” the judges said.

However, Kumar came out top due to his interaction and respect for guests, creating a menu based on their feedback and even holding cooking classes for his guests.

Judges said: “He has made it his personal mission to ensure the food is up to scratch, visiting local markets to personally pick the products.” They also said that his teammates had called him a “team player in its truest sense”.

Ismail Kureshi, sous chef at Le Meridien Al Aqah Beach Resort, who was shortlisted as for Kitchen Hero of the Year, received the award on behalf of Kumar, who couldn’t make the event. Kureshi said: “Myself and all the team at Le Meridien Al Aqah congratulate him.”

“He has done so much for the local people and to make the customer’s happy, getting feedback and always communicating with them to boost himself,” Kureshi added.
