Kuwait to issue tender for $3.2bn airport terminal

Construction Week Online, November 8th, 2012

A $3.2bn tender to build a new airport terminal at Kuwait International Airport is expected to be issued within the next month, according to Bloomberg.

Public Works Ministry Undersecretary Abdul Aziz Al-Kulaib said that the project was one of a number of important infrastructure schemes planned for the country, which include construction of its rail network, a subway system, power stations, hospitals and a new port at Boubyan Island.

The ministry’s assistant undersecretary for Roads Administration, Saud Al-Naki, added that it was planning a spend of around $14.2bn (KWD: 4bn) purely on road projects in the next five years.

These will include two new interchanges on a highway leading to the airport to serve the new terminal. He added that a $2.6bn contract to build the 37.5km Subiya Causeway has been awarded to Hyundai Engineering & Construction. The causeway will Kuwait City to Subiya in the north and to Boubyan Island, where the new port is planned.

The project was first announced in 2011 but has suffered numerous delays and procedural issues.

The project was first tendered in 2009, re-tendered last year and after being awarded to Hyundai in February 2011 had to be re-tendered again last July due to "procedural issues".
