Dubai Municipality has launched an award for eateries with the best food-safety practices.
The award, which the municipality believes is the first of its kind in the region, is hoped to change the traditional measures to maintaining food safety.
“We aim to upgrade the levels of food safety prevailing in the establishments by creating an opportunity for healthy competition,” said Khalid Shareef, director, food-control department.
Inspections and controls may be followed by fines and other punishments, said Shareef, adding that he hoped this positive step would educate eateries on better safety methods.
New initiatives eateries are putting in place to heighten food safety will be taken into account when being considered for the award.
Examples of resourceful best practices without negative environmental impact will also be recognised.
The awards ceremony will take place in early 2013.
