Hyatt Capital Gate Abu Dhabi has earned its eco-friendly stripes with the announcement of its award of ISO 14001 certification.
The hotel, which resides in the leaning Capital Gate building connected to the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC), received the certification within the first year of the hotel’s opening having recently passed the final auditing stage.
ISO 14001 sets the criteria for an environmental management system and assists in reducing the cost of waste management, savings in consumption of energy and materials, lower distribution costs and an improved corporate image.
“As one of the capital’s most recognisable buildings, we are investing in continued environmental sustainability, echoing the call from Hyatt globally to positively impact the communities in which we operate and position ourselves,” said Ashwini Kumar, general manager of Hyatt Capital Gate Abu Dhabi.
Currently the hotel is also in the process of implementing the Abu Dhabi Environmental Health and Safety Management System (AD EHSMS) by recycling some 20% of its entire waste.
In total, the hotel recycled 5.53 tonnes of cartons, 10.92 tonnes of paper, 1.815 tonnes of plastic and 9.266 tonnes of glass bottles amongst other waste.
It claims its cardboard and paper recycling initiative corresponds to the preventing of the destruction of 297 trees, 6,631 gallons of oil, 69,800 kilowatts of energy, 150 gallons of water and 52 cubic yards of landfill space.
