Restaurants and cafes up CSR drive during Ramadan

Devina Divecha, July 25th, 2013

During the holy month of Ramadan, restaurants and cafés are emphasising the importance of giving with Pantry Café, Hummingbird Bakery Dubai and Klayya Bakery & Sweets all indulging in charity drives towards CSR initiatives.

Pantry Café located in Dubai's Al Wasl Square provided iftar boxes for the kids and staff at Senses Residential and Day Care Centre. A team of three from the café went to the centre and helped distribute the food.

Pantry Café's vice chairperson Yana Kalwani said the outlet hopes to participate in similar activities in the future and make this an on-going part of its strategy. Senses Residential and Day Care Centre is a completely non-profit organisation. which is the only residential care facility for special needs in the UAE.

Emirati outlet Klayya Bakery & Sweets launched the ‘Klayya Lantern’ initiative which gives a public platform for UAE National artists to display their work in support of local charity Dar Al Ber which protects orphans, widows and vulnerable families. Fifteen Emirati designers and artists will each design and provide their own twist to the traditional Emirati lantern producing fifteen individual art pieces. The lanterns will be exhibited and put up for sale at the bakery at an event on July 28. All the proceeds from the sale will be donated to Dar Al Ber and will be used to help vulnerable families during Ramadan and Eid.

The Hummingbird Bakery in the Dubai Mall is running “the give campaign” throughout the month of Ramadan. Customers who want to eat the bakery’s special of the month – the Sticky Date Ramadan Special cupcake – are asked to pay what they can, and a 100% of the proceeds will be donated to the Dubai Early Childhood Development Centre. Within the first two weeks of the campaign, over 400 cupcakes were sold.
