S Balakumar, managing director of Dulsco, explains why recycling should be at the top of everyone’s agenda

When was your company established?
Dulsco was first established in 1935 and in 1996 waste management services was added to our portfolio.

Tell us about the growth of the company?
Dulsco has shown significant year on year growth with the waste management services business growing in terms of market share. Dulsco has also been voted for three consecutive years as one of the top 15 companies to work for in the UAE by the ‘Great Places to Work’ institute and we now currently employ around 6000 members of staff.

What is your company vision?
Our vision is to be the leading regional provider of quality services through strengthening relationships between clients, vendors and employees.

What are your core products and services for the hospitality industry?
Through its operations in Abu Dhabi and Dubai, Dulsco offers hotels and other companies an end-to-end waste management solution for the hospitality industry.
These include:
• Hazardous and non-hazardous solid and liquid waste collection and disposal
• Recycling services
• Waste audit and designing tailor made recycling programme
• Customised education and awareness programmes
• Provision of bins and related equipment
• Collection and transport of recyclables
• Reporting and analysis
• Waste handling equipment and fabrication
• Facility management support services
• Grease trap cleaning
• Cleaning of tanks and pipelines
• Pest control services
• Fresh water transportation and supply
• Road sweeping services

What new products have you launched recently?
Dulsco has continuously been updating its services and products portfolio to help its hospitality clients adhere to regulations and reduce their carbon footprint. Dulsco has also introduced new equipment like bin compactors. This is beneficial for the hotels as it reduces the number of trips required for waste collection, resulting in considerable cost savings.

Organic waste accounts for almost 40% of waste generated by hotels and we have piloted ‘Converta’ at select properties. The Converta processes food waste into a nutrient-rich soil supplement. Up to 90% of a hotel’s food waste can be composted with Converta.

The most significant best practice introduced by Dulsco is ‘Recycle to Regain’. This initiative involves designing end-to-end recycling programmes including waste audits, programme design, providing the right equipment, as well as awareness training for housekeeping staff, environment managers and senior management.

What is your best seller?
Collection and disposal of solid and liquid waste remains our core service and the most popular as well. The service is by nature essential to every home or commercial establishment. Dulsco is a specialist in the collection, transportation and disposal of hazardous waste and non-hazardous solid and liquid waste. Recycling services are gaining importance and emerging as a best seller with many hotels and organisations in the other sectors actively seeking this service.

What other news is there from your company this year?
Recycle to Regain mobilised 23,000 school students across UAE and Qatar and collected 6.8 tonnes of recyclables in just a week. As part of continuous efforts to bring together the hospitality community, Dulsco regularly organises sports tournaments for hotel teams. Recently Dulsco concluded the second edition of the inter-hotel volley ball tournament in which eight hotel teams participated.

What do you offer hotels above and beyond expectation?
We work with the hotels not just as a service provider, but more as a partner. On a regular basis we do waste audit for hotels to ascertain if the current waste management support system is in alignment with their waste generation. This helps us and the hotels be more proactive. We also support the hotels in achieving their ‘green’ targets and thereby earn them green certification.

PROTECT-A-BED

Johan Bosman, director of international sales, and Sandra DiVito, VP of hospitality, and healthcare, explain why sleep hygiene is essential knowledge for an efficient hotel operation

Describe your company and when it was established?
Used by hotels worldwide, Protect-A-Bed is the leading supplier of bedding protection products to the hospitality industry and is dedicated to educating hoteliers on the importance of providing a healthy sleep zone for their guests.

Protect-A-Bed is corporately located in Wheeling, IL United States with a global footprint in 40 countries.

With over 33 years of experience in bedding protection, Protect-A-Bed is recognised as a worldwide leader in mattress protection innovation. Protect-A-Bed products create a dry, hygienic, anti-allergy and bed bug-free sleep zone while also protecting the mattress warranty.

What are your core products and services for the hospitality industry?
For hotel guests who are chronic allergy sufferers, there is no better solution than a mattress and box spring encasement. Protect-A-Bed’s AllerZipSmooth anti-allergy bedding features complete protection from allergens such as dust, dust mites, dead skin, mold, pet dander and pollen.

AllerZip Smooth mattress and pillow encasements offer six-sided, cool, quiet, comfortable, air vapour porous water proofing and complete bed bug entry, exit, and bite proof on all surfaces along with our patented Bug Lock and Secure Seal to assure protection.

The BugLock Plus encasement is bed bug entry and escape proof on all six sides and also bite proof and waterproof on the top surface. The Basic Protector offers waterproof protection for the top surface of the mattress at an economical price point.

What is your value proposition to the hotel industry?
As awareness of sleep environment hygiene grows — along with the importance of sustainability and the threat of bed bug infestations — hotel owners and operators are becoming increasingly convinced of the need to protect mattresses and pillows against fluids, dust mites, and bed bugs.

A mattress represents a considerable financial investment, worthy of protection against spills, mishaps and premature deterioration. Developed through extensive scientific research and development, Protect-A-Bed’s line-up of bedding protectors provide an effective, comfortable sleep environment for hotel guests.

Hoteliers save cleaning and labour costs by protecting their assets from human damage and stains. The very first time a mattress is protected from a human accident or careless behaviour, the encasement has paid for itself. By ensuring mattress hygiene, encasements position the mattress for recycling at the end of their life cycle, which contributes to the hotel’s sustainability objectives.

What are the unique features of Protect-A-Bed products?
Protect-A-Bed developed Miracle Membrane, a proprietary membrane, which is waterproof, air vapour porous and protects against liquids and bodily fluids that may ruin a mattress or inhibit a mattress’ warranty claim, and patented BugLock with SecureSeal and three-sided zipper system for encasements. Protect-A-Bed products are listed as Class 1 Medical Devices with the Food and Drug Administration, and have received the Good Housekeeping Seal.

Has there been any recent news?
After five years of research, testing and processing, Protect-A-Bed’s AllerZip Smooth mattress and pillow encasements are the first waterproof bedding encasement products to become certified by the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America. This certification is particularly important to hotel owners and operators and hospitality guests who require an allergy-friendly sleep environment. Hoteliers will realise peace of mind knowing that the guest experience they are providing meets the highest standards of hygiene available.

What do you offer hotels above and beyond expectation?
Protect-A-Bed is proud to be an educator and advocate to the hospitality industry, sponsoring several educational webinars and seminars, publishing and distributing brochures and posters that support asset protection and hygiene, and early pest detection. Protect-A-Bed has published and distributed over 1.5 million ‘Bed Bug 101’ posters educating housekeeping departments on the subject.

SILVER ARCADE LINEN

Sean Xavier, director of business development, says local production facilities and holding large amounts of stock have made SAT the largest manufacturer and seller of linen for the Middle East’s F&B industry

When was your company established?
SAT has been manufacturing food and beverage linen for more than two decades. We have been established for 23 years and have been the masters in producing top quality F&B and room linen.

What new products have you launched recently?
This year, SAT is unveiling two new big brands — SAT-by Viela Guerra and SAT-Lite, exclusively at the Dubai Hotel Show. SAT- by Viela Guerra is a brand designed in Italy, producing exclusive culinary and room amenities. This brand will provide superior leather, metal and resin amenities. However our unique product will remain a very special range of vinyl amenities, which is completely exclusive to SAT-by Viela Guerra.

With SAT-Lite, we will have an amazing range of banquet furniture made with fibre top and steel tubular frames that makes it extremely lightweight, highly durable and very comfortable to use.

Our robot-manufactured banquet chairs come with unique moulded PU base seats known as contour seating which ease tension in the seat by providing ample support. This comes from replacing the traditional plywood seat base with moulded PU, which curves down to provide the right comfort while seated. The moulded PU makes the chair lighter and more durable as well.

What other news is there from your company this year?
SAT is also undergoing a complete rebranding, from our company logo to new catalogues and websites. Two new brands are being launched in order to meet our clients’ expectations and demands of the industry. There is going to be a completely fresh approach towards how our brand is portrayed to our customers.

Who are some of your key clients?
We have a huge clientele list from Burj Al Arab in Dubai to several five star hotels in the Maldives and Kenya and other countries. Our clients are vastly spread around the Middle East, Asia and Africa and they are ever increasing.

We have an extensive marketing team who are highly skilled and are dedicated to reaching out all over the region. SAT does not believe in appointing franchises and agents to sell its products and this ensures that even a distant client gets the same quality, service standards and price as what we offer here in Dubai.

What do you offer hotels above and beyond expectation?
At SAT Linen, we believe in providing maximum services to our customer. We have understood the needs of our clients through our years of experience and interaction with them. This is why we stock large quantity of linen in our warehouse and maintain a huge production facility in Dubai. This helps us to undertake even last minute orders which can be tailored to the need of our client.

We have an in-house laundry facility where all fabrics are pre-shrunk. This ensures our clients that their rectangular placemats will remain rectangular and their round tablecloths will remain round after they are washed several times. This level of experience is going to be reflected in our new brands as well and we will continue to be proactive in whatever we do.

What quality control methods do you adopt?
Every time we introduce a product, it is after long trials on the quality, washing results and various other technical tests, so once we have a product in our official line, it means it is the best available in the market. We have different products catering to different needs. Some are made keeping in mind the class and elegance needed in a fine dining restaurant, some are made to meet the environment in an outdoor restaurant and many other concepts as well. For instance, we have a new product recently launched under SAT Linen — silicone placemats, which are an ideal option for a trendy diner, indoor or outdoor. So every product, depending on what purpose it serves, sells well.

What makes SAT different from other brands?
We always believed in being different and doing things differently. SAT showed the confidence to rewrite many of the principles followed to date and that has been our key success factor. We were the only company two decades ago who believed that investing in a large amount of stock and producing linen locally can help us be more efficient in our services to our clients. This principle has made SAT Linen the biggest manufacturer and seller of food and beverage linen in the Middle East.
