An Indian transit passenger has been sentenced to one month in jailed and fined AED 2000 (US $545) after drunkenly calling the police from his Dubai hotel room and claiming a bomb was about to explode at Dubai International Airport.

A Dubai court heard how the transit passenger checked into his Dubai hotel on December 31 and started drinking while waiting for his next flight, reports The National.

Later that night he then called Dubai Police from the phone in his hotel room claiming to be a Pakistani and that a bomb was going to explode in the airport.

Dubai Police traced the call to the hotel and arrested him where the guest confessed that the call was a fake. He was later charged with filing a false report and drinking without a licence.

Court records did not say whether the airport was evacuated as a result of the false alarm.

The traveller confessed to both charges in the Dubai Misdemeanours Court on Monday and was sentenced to a month in jail for the bomb threat and fined AED 2000 ($545) for the drinking charge.
