Advanced Laundry
Anticipating future needs as Dubai gears up for Expo 2020

Advanced Laundry is set to launch a central production unit with the capability to wash 100 tons of fabric per day, in Dubai, with hopes of capitalising on growth ahead of Expo 2020.

Advanced Laundry business development director Elie Nacouzi said: “Looking at future projects that Dubai will be hosting, especially the Expo 2020, we, at Advanced Laundry, feel that the demand for laundry services will be greater than the supply.”

The company will also introduce two new services for the market — linen protection, and hanger manufacturing.

Explaining the need for the complementary services, Nacouzi said: “In addition to retail laundries and central laundries, most of the hotels located in Abu Dhabi are still working with in-house laundries, which is another market segment for us to penetrate as the cost of producing hangers inside the UAE will be cheaper than importing it from abroad.

The linen protection system will benefit all hotels and residential buildings by spraying the surface of the item and ensuring that no liquid will infiltrate into the mattresses, carpets, couches or any other type of upholstery which will prolong the life of any items sprayed with it.”

Advanced Laundry has also begun lending room and F&B linen to hotels, while the Advanced MED laundry division caters to the linen needs of hospitals and clinics.

Clean Swift
Professional care for luxurious textiles

For Clean Swift’s chief executive officer Steven Maslow, the survival and growth of the laundry business has been an impressive feat. He explains: “Just a few years ago, [the laundry business] seemed to be heading in the same direction as 35mm film.

Two trends dramatically changed the laundry business: one — the high cost of textiles, and two — the time-to-delivery factor. Technology raised the first and lowered the second.”

According to Maslow, professional care of textiles is the “only way to earn a high return from fabric investments. Putting an expensive fabric in a cheap laundry is throwing money down the drain”.

Maslow asserts that using cheap laundry solutions for luxe fabrics reduces the return from the textile investment by rapidly increasing the speed of depreciation.

Caring properly for fabric investments adds 25-35% better value than was possible before, even with natural fibers, by lengthening fabric life and maintaining fresh appearances longer.

He summarises: “A reliable, high-quality laundry saves money and time; it extends the lifecycle of textiles and it does it quickly and reliably. Cheaper solutions ruin fabrics quickly; it’s that simple.”

Clean Swift is an industrial laundry services provider in Dubai and focuses on providing European standard laundry and textile services to the hospitality sector in the UAE. Its bestsellers include green dry cleaning for children’s clothing, and Express2, which provides two hour turnaround for customers.

Granuldisk
A sustainable alternative for the kitchen

Granuldisk pot washing machines use granules (tiny, blue plastic pellets), water and a small amount of detergent to mechanically scrub pots and pans clean. The blasting power combined with high temperatures washes hygienically clean in a matter of minutes, using far less water, energy and chemicals than traditional pot washing methods.

The granule technology eliminates the need for pre-washing, which makes the machines a sustainable choice.

Granuldisk product manager Cecilia Carlsten explains: “Running costs suffer a dramatic decrease as the granule technology eliminates the pre washing sinks and requires far less detergent and chemicals and also less water, which in turn leads to less energy consumption. All combined, you can save up to 60% on running costs. Value is increased, as the washing process is stabilised.”

The company’s bestseller includes the Granule Combi, which is designed for restaurants that serve up to 350 meals per day.

It uses Granuldisk’s Power Granules mixed with detergent and high-pressured water, to hit the surface of the utensils more than 80,000 times per second, at a speed of 200 metres per second. The force created is so powerful that it removes even burnt or dried food remains far more efficiently than manual pot washing.

Grauldisk has also launched a slim space saver for cramped kitchens — the Granule Smart — a compact machine with built in loading table and fold-out hatch, which fits in spaces of less than 1m2.

Magnarab Equipment Trading
Laundry solutions for smaller hotels

Amongst Magnarab’s latest products are 20kg and 40kg spin washer extractors. The company has also observed a growing trend of using automated inventory systems that use barcodes to label and manage uniforms.

According to Magnarab principal consultant Sreejith Narendran, many hotels are now seeking smaller outfits to process their bed, bath, and hospitality linen and smaller hotels are moving away from centralised laundry systems.

Narendran explains: “The main challenges for hoteliers is to get the right quality and right price from service providers and we believe it’s high time lean enterprises takeover a portion of the market share. Large central laundries are good to cater to large hotel loads with large batch sizes.

However, to handle smaller loads and to be offering individual attention to batches, there is a need for higher flexibility in laundries and smaller sized laundries can offer the best solutions.
Another priority for Magnarab, is the use of energy saving systems — a challenge that is particularly tough for start-ups and smaller companies.

“Water recycling systems have always been a priority of large laundries but the unique challenges the laundry wastewater represents has been tough on many aspiring companies. We represent Kemco from USA, which been working for the past three years under Middle East conditions and has proven to be extremely reliable and of high quality standards,” says Narendran.

Prologic
Pioneering technological solutions

Prologic launched the Laundry Manager system in partnership with Foundation Logic Systems to make inventory and linen tracking easier.

Prologic vice president – hospitality Amit Sharda comments: “Everything from the washing to the ironing is automated or semi-automated. Another area that a lot of hotels and state of the art laundries are looking at is ways to make their inventory taking and linen tracking easier. The RFID technology is a very frequently spoken about topic in the hospitality industry today.”

“Having spoken to a number of laundry managers and housekeeping directors, the most common things I have heard are the difficulties in taking the inventory, which could take hours and still be wrong, and another is keeping track of what is going to laundry and what is being returned.

The sheer numbers are daunting and the end result is purchasing more than required or less than required. With our system, close to 900 items can be counted per second, making the whole process of inventory taking or linen tracking a breeze,” he adds.

The system uses RFID technology to keep track of uniforms and linen that have been sent to the laundry and returned. “With a tracker in place, the exact number of each type of linen would be tracked inside and out rather than relying on the age old method of weighing the soiled linen,” explains Sharda.

Prologic has recently signed three major properties for its linen and uniform managers — Rosewood, Abu Dhabi, Burj Khalifa, and The Ritz-Carlton Abu Dhabi, Grand Canal. The company is also in the process of upgrading the Laundry Manager system and will soon be rolling out a web-based software.

Viking Gulf
Cleaning and waste management leaders

Viking Gulf was founded in the UAE in 1987 to create a one-stop shop for the cleaning industry and over the years has become one of the leading suppliers of cleaning and waste management products.

Commenting on cleaning challenges faced by the hotel industry, Viking Gulf COO Henrik Mahaini says: “I think one of the main challenges within cleaning is to turn over the rooms as quickly as possible.

With high occupancy rates there is very little time to clean and make up the room before it has to be ready for new guests. Our innovative floor cleaning solutions are able to reduce the cleaning time by up to 50%.

The time saving can then either be used for quality improvement by allowing more time for the housekeepers to finish one room or they can do each room faster.”

To this end, Viking Gulf launched the Ultimate Duo microfiber floor mop. The Duo system is a two-sided front and back patented microfiber mop. It has a high absorption capacity and more mechanical scrubbing effect on the floor, which gives a better cleaning result than traditional mops.

Viking Gulf is also introducing new environmentally-friendly cleaning products. “Our Decitex microfiber products are doing very well in the hospitality industry.

The quality of the microfiber mops enables the cleaner to clean floor surfaces without using chemicals, which reduces the cost of cleaning and supports the environment — the floor mop is even validated for disinfection complying to EN13697 just using water,” he explains.
