Politicians in France are trying to introduce a new measure to increase taxes on hotel stays by more than five times, with an even bigger hike in Paris.

An amendment to France's draft budget this week raised maximum hotel taxes to €8 euros (US $10.92)) from €1.50 (US $2.05), according to Reuters, in a bid to bring them more into line with other European cities including Berlin, Rome and Brussels.

An additional €2 (US $2.73) will be added in the Ile-de-France region, which includes Paris, in order to fund public transport.

According to the report, government ministers are against the increases, with concerns that it could undermine efforts to boost the tourism sector.

The CEO of Accor, Sebastien Bazin, has also spoken out against the changes, warning that they could cut hotel margins and penalise tourism.
