Hilton Abu Dhabi begins beach reclamation project

Parinaaz Navdar, July 22nd, 2014

Hilton Abu Dhabi has launched a beach reclamation eco-project, which will extend the hotel’s beachfront on the corniche by more than 1400 square metres while causing minimal damage to the environment.

The coastal eco-project will be staged in two phases so guests can continue using the Hiltonia Beach Club facilities.

The reclamation project will create an underwater sea wall, which will be formed using custom-designed sand filled geo textile tubes, eco-engineered to replicate natural environments for local marine life to inhabit.

Mimicing a natural fringing reef, the sea wall will also allow waves to break offshore to protect the beachfront from erosion.

Hiltonia Beach Club, Hilton Abu Dhabi director of sports and leisure Daniel Chamberlain said: “As an internationally recognised Blue Flag standard beach and the region’s most eco-friendly Hilton Worldwide hotel, sustainability is at the core of everything we do. We have taken major steps to ensure that this reclamation project protects and preserves our marine environment, while also enhancing the guest experience.

"Once the project is complete, members and guests will be able to enjoy and relax on a 360m length of spectacular beach front which will include a special, supervised play area designated for children, where they can enjoy building sand castles."

Hilton Abu Dhabi received the 2014 Hilton Worldwide Eco Award for green practices at the hotel.
