Intercontinental Hotels Group is to operate a hotel in the tallest building in the western United States – currently under development – under its Intercontinental brand.

Set to open in 2017, the hotel will be in the Korean Air and Hanjin Group’s US $1.1 billion Wilshire Grand, which is currently under construction and will rise to 1100 feet (73 storeys).

With 900 rooms, it will become the largest Intercontinental hotel in the Americas region and will have a sky-lobby on the 70th floor.

“InterContinental Hotels & Resorts is IHG’s luxury brand, which we have grown to be more than twice the size of any other luxury brand globally,” said IHG Americas president Kirk Kinsell.

“We remain focused on building its presence in top-tier cities and resorts around the globe; and our partnership with Korean Air is very much in line with this strategy. We are pleased to be working with such highly experienced owners.”

Among the design features of the hotel will be natural wood and warm colours, to reflect LA’s beach culture, while the sky lobby will incorporate the city’s car culture through abstract representations of car lines into the internal panelling and décor.

Hanjin International Corp VP Heather Cho said: “We are delighted to have InterContinental Hotels & Resorts join our Korean Air family of hotels.

“The InterContinental brand is well-respected by world travellers and embodies the luxury experience we intend to provide at the Wilshire Grand. They recognized the potential of this significant project and that was important in our decision."
