A chef from a hotel in Dubai has been jailed for three months and fined AED10,000 (US $2723) for causing an incident which saw five people hospitalised for food poisoning.

The Indian chef had had been responsible for preparing meals for a work party at a restaurant in Dubai Marina on October 19 two years ago, The National reports.

Five women subsequently suffered from severe stomach pain, diarrhoea and vomiting and, after reporting the incident to the police, it was discovered that the cause was a mousse which had expired and contained salmonella.

The chef had denied responsibility and did not appear at Dubai Court of Misdemeanours to face the charge of posing risk to others’ lives. He was convicted in absentia.

Both the restaurant and hotel manager denied the charge in court and were acquitted.

As reported yesterday, a Dubai hotel’s manager and cook were arrested over an incident which saw 12 people hospitalised as a result of food poisoning.
