Arabian Business staff writer, October 5th, 2014

Construction work has started on The Avenues, a project to regenerate a stretch of waterfront in Manama which will feature retail and leisure facilities.

The project will give the public access to a 1.5 kilometre stretch waterfront corniche which includes children's outdoor play areas, a jogging track and outdoor gym sets as well as waterfront restaurants and cafes, retail outlets, a souk area, an indoor market, movie theatres and arcades framed by a public park.

King Faisal Corniche Development Company (KFCDC) has held a groundbreaking ceremony to mark the start of construction of the $50 million project.

"The Avenues Bahrain... will provide a boost to the economy, specifically the tourism sector, in the kingdom while offering the public a place for everyday leisure and entertainment," a statement said.

It will cover a total land area of approximately 265,000 square metres spread along Manama's north facing waterfront and is planned for opening in early 2016, the statement added

The project is being developed by private Bahraini investors in partnership with retail giant MH Alshaya and Mabanee Corporation.

Yousif Taqi, deputy chairman of KFCDC and CEO of Al-Salam Bank Bahrain said that while still in its early stages, regional and international retail investors have already expressed their "serious interest" in committing to leasing units.

Waleed AlSharian, Mabanee general manager, added: "It gives us great pleasure to be a part of this exceptional project. We greatly admire the unique ambience of the Bahraini culture and we believe the future development potential in the kingdom is in line with our vision to further develop The Avenues as a regional destination."

The ministry has already developed beachfronts located in Abu Sobh, Al Ghous coast, Malkiya, Al Dour, Arad, Khalifa Al Kabeer Corniche, Arad Fort and other coastline locations.

Al Fateh Corniche, Sitra Corniche, Tubli Bay, Zallaq, Barbar, Juffair, Askar, Northern Highway, Al Dair, Samaheej and Qalali coasts will also undergo a major facelift.
