A waiter who worked at a Palm Jumeirah hotel has reportedly been jailed for a year after starting a fire at residences provided by his employer.

According to a report by Gulf News, the 26-year-old Indian waiter entered his ex-girlfriend’s accommodation and set fire to her shoe and bed, after she dumped him.

He was jailed by the Dubai Court of First Instance for one year for deliberately setting fire to the belongings of the ex-girlfriend, who was a receptionist at the same hotel, endangering the life of another waitress who was sleeping, destroying private belongings worth AED200, and causing damage to hotel properties worth Dh2100, as well as consuming liquor.

However, he was acquitted of secretly entering a women-only place, the hotel’s female residence.

Entering his plea, the waiter had told the court: "I was too drunk and not aware of what I did. I did it unintentionally, but I don’t even remember starting a fire.

"I wrecked the claimant’s belongings, but I have already paid for the damages. I went there to see my ex-girlfriend."

According to the report, the waiter had admitted he had been drinking with one of his friends before the incident.

The ruling remains subject to appeal for 15 days.
