Istanbul bombing threatens Turkey's tourism

Several countries have warned their citizens to avoid tourist attractions in Instanbul and other big cities.

Concerns have been raised  that a terrorist attack at the heart of the historic Sultanahmet tourist district on Tuesday could have serious repercussions on the country’s vital tourism industry. 

A suicide bomber killed at least 10 people and injured 15 others near the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia, which are major tourist sites in one of the world's most visited cities. 

The majority of the victims were German visitors, and Germany and Denmark are among those who have issued travel warnings in the interest of their citizens' safety.

Turkey attracted 40 million visitors in 2014, according to Turkey's Ministry of Culture and Tourism, and Istanbul is the the fastest growing destination city in Europe, reports the Global Destinations Cities Index.
