Day in the life: Joynal Abdeen

10:00pm: I wake up for work when most people are going to bed after putting in a hard day at the office, as I am tasked with doing a night shift, I take a shower to get ready for my shift.

11:00pm: I catch the bus in the dead of the night from our accommodation to the Millennium Plaza Hotel in Dubai.

11:45pm: I freshen up and get ready for my shift that will start at the break of the day.

12:00am: Upon arriving at the office, my duty starts by greeting my colleagues who are also getting in for their shifts with a smile. I then take a handover from the previous shift and check status of the occupancy levels in the hotel. I also print out the room list to prepare me for the imminent guests’ arrival and departure.

12:15am: I grab a quick bite at the staff cafeteria before continuing with the rest of my day.

12:30am: I check which rooms have scheduled check outs and schedule room cleaning, housekeeping and maintenance.

01:30am: At this time I check all the public areas such as lounges, lobbies, bathrooms and hallways, and work with the team to clean and maintain them.

04:00am: I inspect the ‘manager on duty’ log, to see if there are any issues. I then speak with the duty manger to ensure that everything is in order, and all complaints or requirements are addressed.

05:30am: I take a quick break to pray.

06:30am: I compile the night shift report and send it to all departments.

08:00am: I head back to the staff cafeteria for breakfast.

08:30am: I hand over the duty mobile and master keys to the next shift team. I also brief them with detailed information of what happened during my shift.

09:30am: I take the bus back to the accommodation.

10:00am: I’m back home and getting ready to go to bed when most people are sipping on their morning coffee at their desk. I catch up with my family over the phone and head to bed, and sleep throughout the day.
