Hotels in Oman have been advised that all properties must register their guests on a daily basis, with the Royal Oman Police, according to Times of Oman.

According to the Omani newspaper, the reporting system has been considered “semi-voluntary” by some hotels.

However, the Omani Ministry of Tourism announced this week that it is now tightening up the rules, so that all hotels must now submit their guests records to the police.

Speaking to Times of Oman, Ministry of Tourism undersecretary Maitha Al Mahrouqi said: “Only five stars and four stars complied because they have regulations but three stars, two stars, one stars and camps [are] now required to activate the visitor system which is a government system to collect all visitor data at one place.

The reasons cited by the ministry for this change are concerns over security, and creating a more transparent auditing process.

The hotels will be required to provide details of the guest’s name and nationality, and check-in and check-out date.
