Dubai menus may display calorie count

David Thompson, January 12th, 2017

Changes to the regulations surrounding F&B outlets in Dubai could soon change, as Dubai Government is set to make restaurants and cafes print calorie information on their menus, according to local media.

The initiative, led by Dubai Health Authority, will be rolled out in phases, reports What’s on.

“The move will help promote the concept of mindful eating and will deter people from frequently opting for high calorie meals,” director of clinical nutrition Dr Waffa Ayesh, told The National.

“More information is better than less or no information,” she added.

At present it is estimated that 47.5% of UAE residents are overweight.

Dubai officials are reported to be working on the plan, with no exact timeline for the scheme to be rolled out as yet.
