A new pilot programme is helping Pullman Dubai Creek City Centre Hotel and Residences reduce food wastage by an estimated 5.6 tonnes or the equivalent of “14,000 plated meals” a year, according to the hotel.

The programme, conducted in cooperation with London-based Winnow Food Waste Management has helped the hotel reduce food wastage by 70% in its initial months of implementation.

Pullman general manager Nishan Silva said in a statement: “So far, the programme has witnessed a reduction in food waste by almost 70% in the initial months. With such outstanding results, AccorHotels is now looking to roll out the programme gradually to all its UAE properties by 2018.”

Estimates show that 3.27 million tonnes of leftover food from homes, institutions, hotels and eateries are bulldozed into landfills every year in the UAE.

According to UAE Minister of Climate Change and Environment Dr Thani Ahmad Al Zeyoudi, food wastage costs the UAE an approximate AED 13 billion (US$ 3.5 billion) per year.
