Careem introduces cash payments for rides in Abu Dhabi

Claudia De Brito, June 19th, 2017

Careem, the Dubai headquartered, ride-hailing app, has announced that Abu Dhabi customers can now pay for their trips using cash.

This follows on from an announcement in February that Careem was resuming full service in the capital with both instant and scheduled rides. Car types in Abu Dhabi are Limo (Lexus cars) and MiniVan (Toyota Previas) and the minimum fare is AED 40.

Back in 2013, Saudi Arabia was the first market Careem introduced cash payment into due to the heavy cash-based economy.

As the only ride-hailing app operating in Abu Dhabi, Careem will continue to introduce new components to the service to help improve customer experience and to make Careem an affordable and reliable way to get around the city.

Careem VP business development and government relations Bassel Al Nahlaoui said in a statement: “Abu Dhabi is a key city for us and it’s great to be back as the only players in the market. Giving our valued customers the opportunity to pay with cash provides them with more flexibility around how they use the service. Careem is very much an organic, home-grown operation- so when we are asked for something, we are driven to deliver on it.  If cash is king for people in Abu Dhabi, then for sure let’s make it easy for them to pay for their rides this way.”

The home-grown start-up has seen early success since its launch in 2012, expanding quickly across over 80 cities. Abu Dhabi was the second city in which Careem began offering its services.
