No alcohol will be served in bars and restaurants across Dubai on the occasion of the birth of the Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) next week, it has been announced.

Tourism chiefs have sent a circular to establishments in the city alerting them about the 24-hour dry period.

The communication issued by The Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM) has confirmed that the dry period will run from 5pm on Thursday November 30 until 6pm on Friday December 1.

The dry period coincides with a number of live licensed events including Take That at Dubai Media City Amphitheatre and the Emirates Airline Dubai Rugby Sevens.

Organisers of the Take That concert previously hinted the event might be moved forward to the Wednesday if an alcohol ban was imposed.

The final public holiday of the year also marks UAE National Day. Public sector workers will be given a four day weekend but no announcement has yet been made regarding the private sector.
