Careem acquires RoundMenu. Careem acquires RoundMenu.

Careem, a Dubai-based ride hailing app, has acquired RoundMenu, a Middle Eastern online restaurant directory and reservation platform and app, to try out food delivery services.

The purchase is part of its wider investment into food delivery, Careen said in a statement. RoundMenu currently operates in 18 cities across the Middle East including Saudi Arabia, UAE and Egypt according to its website. Since its launch in 2012, RoundMenu has raised US $3.1 million (AED 11.3 million) in funding, the statement further added.

The expansion into food delivery will help the company to compete with Uber Eats and other food delivery services active in the region including Kuwait-based Talabat, Deliveroo and Zomato.

"Careem will begin testing a delivery capability for RoundMenu customers on a small scale later this month," the company said in a statement to Reuters.
