Jordan launches sustainable tourism map

The Jordan Tourism Board (JTB) along with the American non-profit organisation, Tourism Cares, has launched the “Meaningful Travel Map of Jordan.” The map, comprising 12 touristic experiences, is aimed to benefit both travellers and the local communities.

Available on GoLocalJordan.com, the map offers visitors experiences conducted by Jordanian non-profit organisations and other local enterprises. The aim of the map is to provide tourists with quality cultural experiences while also benefitting the underprivileged local population, The Jordan Times reported.

The map was launched during the opening sessions of Tourism Cares with Jordan. The event brought together more than 70 delegates from the US and Europe and 40 representatives from Jordanian tourism sector, the report added.

Commenting on the new map, tourism minister Lina Annab said: “Our communities have as much to offer as our heritage, and the good news is that now, you don’t even have to choose.”

“Any trip to Jordan would not be complete without a visit to Petra or Wadi Rum — and one or two of these enterprises offering a unique insight into the spirit and people of Jordan,” Annab noted.

During the sessions, reference was made to local social tourism experiences on the map such as the Bani Hamida Women’s Weaving Project or the recently-founded Jordan Trail Association.
