Marriott hotels to eliminate straws from properties by 2019

Marriott International will be eliminating plastic straws and drink stirrers – which is approximately 1 billion straws and 250 million stirrers - from all of its properties globally by 2019.

The US-based hotel giant said that it plans to use the existing supplies in the meantime and provide alternatives to customers who ask for it but the elimination will take place across its 6,500 properties worldwide.

Marriott moves come soon after Hilton revealed its plans to do the same while Anantara and Avani hotels pledged to do away with plastic straws last year and started to implement it from January 1st, 2018.

Besides straws, Marriott along with IHG, have also begun to do away with tiny shampoo bottles and replace them with wall-mounted pumps to reduce plastic waste.
