Shangri-La Barr Al Jissah Resort & Spa to end single-use plastics in 2019

Hotelier Middle East Staff, December 18th, 2018

The Shangri-La Barr Al Jissah Resort & Spa recently held a double tree lighting ceremony. As well as a traditional festive tree, there was second tree that was made entirely from plastic bottles, done to highlight the Resort’s commitment to eco-awareness and sustainability.

Made from 2,800 plastic bottles and located in the courtyard of Al Bandar Hotel, the tree signifies the resort’s aim to end single-use plastic and is an effort to draw attention to the volume of plastic water bottles consumed in the Sultanate of Oman.

Plastic straws were replaced by the introduction of metallic straws in the summer of 2018 at the resort, with additional measures planned for 2019 when the resort aims to end the use of plastic water bottles in the outdoor areas with the introduction of water fountains where guests can refill reusable water bottles, according to the resort’s press release. The tree lighting ceremony coincided with the launch of the resort’s Festive Market, which runs until  December 29 and features six stalls offering a selection of food and beverage items.
