RAK 'ice-themed' water park to open this week

Edward Attwood, September 26th, 2010

The first development in a giant new theme park and resort destination in Ras Al Khaimah (RAK) will open to the public this week.

Ice Land Water Park, part of the 125-acre WOW RAK development – based in Al Hamra - is able to accommodate 10,000 visitors daily, and has more than 50 attractions and slides.

The second phase in the WOW RAK project consists of a chalet-type seaside resort and shopping mall – including a 4D theatre and ice-skating rink - which is expected to open in autumn next year.

A further amusement park – including five ‘intensively themed zones’ (Cosmos, Oceanic, Amazon, Mountain and Desert) – will open in autumn 2012.

The development is run by a joint venture called Polo RAK Amusement, which consists of India’s Polo Amusement Group, RAK Properties and RAK Investment Authority (RAKIA).

Polo RAK Amusement says the Ice Land Water Park includes the world’s largest manmade waterfall – the 120-foot high Penguin Falls - as well as the world’s biggest ‘rain dance’ pool.

Other features include a regular-sized soccer field with soft turf, shallow water and rain showers called Aqua Games, as well as a man-made coral reef snorkelling experience.

The park’s Slide Zone has 24 water slides emerging from five towers with heights of up to 110 feet.

“Ice Land Water Park will distinguish itself from other water parks around the world through its unique 'Enduring Guest Experiences' concept wherein we will offer guest experiences with segmental appeal to tap a wider range of age, lifestyle and culture groups,” said Balwant Singh, managing director of Polo RAK Amusement.

The site includes a water desalination plant capable of producing 525,000 gallons a day, and has been equipped with two water recycling plants that will provide water for horticultural purposes.

Ice Land Water Park will open to the public on Thursday.
