The travel chaos for expats flying to Europe for Christmas may not be over, as airlines flying out of the UAE warned passengers to check the status of their flights before setting off for the airport.

Despite the re-opening of UK airports Heathrow and Gatwick, temperatures in Europe have again threatened to plummet; which could lead to more flights being delayed or cancelled.

Emirates airline warned passengers via its website: “Passengers are reminded that flights may still be affected by the changing weather conditions. Emirates customers due to travel to or from Europe are advised to check the status of their flights on emirates.com for possible changes or delays, before departing for the airport”.

Etihad Airways meanwhile, has arranged accommodation for passengers, who could face being stranded in Abu Dhabi if the weather situation gets worse, saying: “Etihad Airways is monitoring the weather situation in Western Europe very closely. The airline has experienced some disruptions to its flights as a result of the closure of London Heathrow Airport. Check flight status and flight disruptions for more information.

“Passengers are encouraged to commence their journey to Abu Dhabi where Etihad will provide free accommodation as flights to Heathrow resume. This will enable Etihad to get people to their ultimate destination as quickly as possible once Heathrow opens,” the site added.
