High-end Japanese restaurant Megu is due to open on the April 7 at The Pearl-Qatar in Doha, Qatar.

This is one of the many restaurants opening on The Pearl’s four million square metres of reclaimed island “urban residential” land in Qatar.

Founded in New York, Megu is a modern Japanese restaurant serving “very expensive but exquisite food” according to Walid Maalouf, general manager of Hospitality Development Company, the hospitality branch of Pearl developers, United Development Company.

“It has a higher price point than the likes of Zuma and Nobu and uses only the very finest ingredients from seafood to fish and Japanese specialities like Kobe beef. We have given it the most prominent space on the island. The interior feels almost Cathedral-like with its 16m high ceilings and there are spectacular views.”

With two outlets in New York, one in India and one in Moscow, The Pearl will host the only Megu restaurant in the Middle East.

Maalouf commented that the effects of the tragic earthquake and Tsunami in Japan is having an impact on the ease of sourcing the ingredients, although said it was not affecting the quality.

“We have had to source some alternatives. Qatar is being very cautious about sourcing food from Japan and you have to allow a couple more days to obtain the ingredients. If it gets through after the many radiation screenings and checks then that means it is extremely safe. We have been sourcing alternative ingredients from all over the world,” said Maalouf.
