A popular restaurant in the UAE capital that was infested with rats and cockroaches has been shut down after shocked health inspectors found insects swarming across the kitchen.

Al Ibrahimi Restaurant in Madinat Zayed was closed on the spot after inspectors from the Abu Dhabi Food Control Authority reported overflowing, stinking drainage pipes and rotting food.

Inspectors destroyed some 85kg of food on the spot, the ADFCA said in a statement, adding the kitchen showed “utterly deplorable hygienic conditions”.

“Cockroaches in abundance, insects and bugs all over the cooking area, signs of the presence of rodents in the basement kitchen, large quantities of meat and chicken products emitting bad smell,” were cited as just some of the violations recorded.

“We were shocked to find the restaurant, which we understand is a popular eatery, was functioning in violation of all norms of public hygiene,” said Mohamed Jalal Al Reyatsa, director of communications at ADFCA.

Al Ibrahimi Restaurant was just one of 70 food outlets inspected in the Madinat Zayed area of the capital on Tuesday. In total authorities issued 63 warnings and destroyed 219kg of food.
