Rengarajan Rengasamy from Armani Hotel Dubai took home the much-coveted Sommelier of the Year Award, sponsored by MMI, at the Caterer Middle East Awards 2011 last night.
Speaking to Hoteliermiddleeast.com after the awards, Rengasamy said: “This is my second time in the Caterer awards, I was shortlisted last time and I feel really proud."
He particularly impressed judges with his ability to smash sales targets and his drive to improve the outlet through the introduction of new menu offerings and concepts.

"As a sommelier I am not only a wine sommelier; I take care of sake, I take care of cigars as well. I have won awards worldwide and I am entering another one next year so that I can show what Dubai’s got. I also do sommelier clubs and I try to create a club where sommeliers can grow and learn about wines," he added.
The two highly-commended nominees in this category were last year’s winner Daniel Blais from Fairmont Bab Al Bahr, and first-time entrant Krste Georgiev from Cavalli Club, Restaurant and Lounge.
