Oman Air has appointed Australian Wayne Pearce as its new chief executive officer, following the delayed retirement of Peter Hill.

Pearce took over the reins of Oman's national carrier on January 3, the airline said in a statement.

Pearce has held several senior executive positions in Qantas and other airlines in the region. He was also the group managing director with Gold Medal Travel in the UK, which has a special focus on the Gulf region.

Oman Air chairman Darwish Bin Ismail Bin Ali Al Bulushi said: “I am extremely pleased to welcome Wayne Pearce to Oman Air. We are confident that his experience and expertise will enable the airline to reach even greater heights of excellence and confirm it as one of the leading airlines in the region and beyond.”

Hill was originally due to retire in September last year but delayed his departure at the carrier until a suitable replacement could be found.

In November, Oman Air confirmed six orders for Boeing’s next-generation 787-8 Dreamliner, in a deal that was estimated to be worth around US $1.2bn.

Loss-making Oman Air currently has a fleet of seven Airbus A330s, fifteen Boeing 737NGs and two turboprops.

Officials at the carrier have previously said that they expect the airline to break even around 2014.
