Oman has slashed the cost of a 10-day tourism visa from 20 Omani Riyals (US $51.9) to five Riyals ($12.9) in a bid to make travel to destination more affordable.

The move is part of a major campaign being rolled out by Oman's Ministry of Tourism to boost visitors in 2012 - a year in which Muscat was designated 'Capital of Arab Tourism'.

Ghasi Humeed Al Hashmi, assistant director general of tourism promotion, Oman Ministry of Tourism unveiled a brand new logo for Muscat's tourism campaign to Dubai's travel trade and media last night.

"We have launched a fresh and exciting campaign with a new brand mark for Muscat Arab Tourism Capital 2012 that Oman is very proud of," he announced.

"It is the winning design from a competition that attracted over 320 entrants. It conveys an Omani welcome with dates and coffee, with Arabic calligraphy illustrating the iconic buildings of Muttrah's corniche. The brand uses the national brand's colour palatte. The colour's represent Omani culture and heritage and thus the new design complements our national brand mark."

Al Hashmi added: "Muscat 2012 has a fresh and exciting calendar of arts, sports and tourism events. These are unique compared to those you might see elsewhere in the region as they focus on our Arabian culture and heritage and complement other activities possible on a short-break to Oman such as an evening at the Royal Opera House Muscat."

Total international arrivals to Muscat topped 2.4 million, up 14% from 2010. The GCC market was a major contributor to Oman tourism with 27% growth in numbers.
