What a difference a year makes. Hotelier’s 2011 Salary Survey was conducted as the Arab Spring was taking root, but much has happened since then. Elections in Egypt, ex-Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak sentenced to life in prison, Syria on the brink of civil war, Muammar Gaddafi captured and killed in Libya — certainly a great deal for one region to be dealing with. And, as always, we have found that the hospitality industry is one of the first to notice the impact of such events.


But, aside from regional unrest, this year’s survey has thrown up some very interesting trends. Wages appear to be on the increase, thankfully, but line staff are still not being paid enough.

Hoteliers are not as happy in their jobs as they were 12 months ago and those involved in HR are more about the money than the prestige.
