A leading bar consultancy firm has said that bars in the Middle East are not training staff correctly with the latest information and drinks knowledge.
Shane Gardiner, founder of Spirited, told Hotelier Middle East that while bars in the region are giving their staff training, “bars are still second fiddle to restaurants and the standards of drinks and service have a long way to go”.
He said that bars are not paying enough to recruit first-class staff, which is resulting in the region’s best bars still lagging behind those in London and New York.
Gardiner added: “In general, staff in the Middle East have a good amount of training. This is great, however it is no good if the information given is out dated and it does not sink in.
“We have found many people teaching wrong recipes, out dated techniques and far too many sessions within a short space of time which negatively effects operating hours and also does not allow staff to take time to reflect and study.”
Spirited is currently working on plans for a cocktail school, and until then, it is featuring weekly cocktail masterclasses on its Facebook page.
