Dubai Municipality’s Food Control Department has launched a new programme to improve health conditions of medium and low-level restaurants and cafes in the older areas of Dubai.
The initiative will focus on the shops “reluctant to respond to directives set by food control inspectors”, said Khalid Mohammed Sharif Al Awadhi, director of food control department at Dubai Municipality, and aims to encourage them to apply the information they have learned in different training courses organised by the concerned authorities.
“The department noted that some medium- and low-level food outlets get better for a short time and quickly commit many grave mistakes that adversely affect the safety of food offered by them,” Al Awadhi said.

“These eateries have trained supervisors according to the requirements of the municipality but they are not active in the application of sanitary conditions and the managements are not much aware of a culture of food safety in their organisation,” he explained.
The initative is a follow-up step of the mandatory health supervisor system introduced by the municipality about two years ago.
"As part of the programme the department will identify such food establishments which cover a large segment of consumers and invite their health supervisors to attend the workshop to analyse serious mistakes," he said.
The specialists will also review the decorations, activities, type of food items prepared and number of customers. The officials will also identify specific remedial steps based on the analysis, which will be followed-up by the inspector.
Sultan Ali Tahir, head of food inspection said that this initiative is not a repetition of regular inspection as these institutions aim to find the causes and treat the root, ensuring errors are not repeated.
