The UAE’s Flydubai and Air Arabia will start operating from Qatar’s Hamad International Aiport when the facility opens on 1 April.

"It will be Air Arabia, Flydubai, [Kuwait’s] Jazeera Airways, [Iran’s] Aseman Airlines and so on" Akbar Al Baker, CEO of Qatar Airways, which will manage the new airport, told Arabian Business.

Al Baker added that there was still no specific date for Qatar Airways to move its full operations over to Hamad International, although he confirmed this would happen by the end of the year.

Twelve airlines will move over Doha International Airport to start operating from Hamad International on April 1. Al Baker said these would all be low-cost carriers, or airlines that do not require lounge facilities.

The $15.5bn airport is long overdue, having taken eight years to build. Located in reclaimed land, it will handle 30 million passengers a year initially, with this figure rising to 50 million by the end of the decade.

Flydubai, which is owned by the Dubai government, operates nine services daily to Doha.
