Abu Dhabi Airports Company (ADAC) on Wednesday said that passenger traffic at Abu Dhabi International grew by 13.1 percent in February compared to the same month last year.

More than 1.2 million passengers passed through the airport last month while aircraft movements in February also grew by 7.5 percent over the same period last year, totalling 9,960 movements.

India recorded the highest traffic for the UAE capital's airport in February, followed by Germany, Thailand, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan, ADAC said.

ADAC added in a statement that cargo volume increased by 16.7 percent, reaching 50,020 tonnes.

Ahmad Al Haddabi, chief operating officer at ADAC, said: "The significant increase in passengers, aircraft and cargo volumes is in line with the anticipated growth trend for Abu Dhabi International Airport.

"ADAC's on-going investment in improving facilities for every business and leisure traveller, alongside its comprehensive airline marketing strategy, are ensuring that the award winning airport continues to provide the needed facilities and capacity whilst attracting new airlines and launching new routes."

Last week, ADAC said it has appointed Tony Douglas, a former CEO of London Heathrow, as its chief executive.

Douglas, also formerly CEO of Abu Dhabi Ports Company (ADPC), replaces James Bennet who resigned a month ago.

The goal of the multi-billion dollar Mid Field Terminal mega-project is to boost airport capacity to 40 million passengers a year - a critical element in Abu Dhabi's vision to become a global commercial hub and thriving destination for international tourism.
