Outdoor furniture specialist Kudos Global has launched a competition to design its next daybed as it plans to grow its business through a design-driven approach.

In partnership with Hotelier, the company is inviting entries from the next big hotel design star to design a daybed for a five-star hotel; the three shortlisted designs will be made into real-life prototypes and displayed at this year’s Hotelier Middle East Awards (30 October 2013 at Dubai’s JW Marriott Marquis hotel) where the winner will be decided by 600 top hoteliers.

The winning design will be included into Kudos Global’s new ‘Designer’ collection and the creator will receive $3000 dollar prize plus 3% of the selling price for each product sold by the company. The two runners up will also receive cash prizes – the first runner up receiving a sum of $1500 and the second runner up the amount of $750.

According to general manager, Dan Lacey, the competition is part of the group’s design-driven approach, he stated: “We are committed to growing our range through design; it is the only way to lead.

“Our new designer collection will feature furniture that integrates shading in a new way and we have a few ideas around interconnecting modular pieces on the drawing board.”

Lacey advises those entering the competition to think about the materials it uses: its signature all-weather hand woven wicker and aluminium and, as the company is now owned by parent, Absolute Pools, who manufacture in fiberglass, it is also possible to add elements of this material to create a hybrid design.

As the all-weather wicker on its furniture is still woven by hand, which can take two days to complete on a typical daybed, Lacey also suggest that new ideas for patterns in the weave might catch the judges eye.

“Ultimately, the winning design will be one that shouts I really want to lie there; that’s where I want to spend my day,” he adds.

Entries for the competition: Can be as simple as a hand-sketched drawing or a full rendering, which are simply submitted by emailing one entry only to: daybedcomp@itp.com

Entries should be submitted by Thursday 25th July, 2013 when an expert panel of judges will shortlist the entries leaving just three finalists.
