The Procurement Person of the Year Award at the Hotelier Middle East Awards 2014 was named last night - Shaheer Hamza, director of materials, Beach Rotana Abu Dhabi.
Sunil Mirchandani, LE channel marketing at du, the sponsor of the category, presented the award at the Japanese-themed ceremony to Hamza, with the highly commended nod going to Pamela Muthukrishna, the director of purchasing at Anantara Dubai The Palm Resort & Spa.
Over the past 18 months, Hamza has saved a vast amount of money while adding an additional 324 suppliers to the hotel purchasing system. He has also reduced Beach Rotana’s contract price with suppliers over the last year through immaculate market research and close cooperation with Rotana sister properties.
Talking to Hotelier Middle East after receiving the award, Hamza said: "My first checkpoint is quality. We have a standard in Rotana so we go with that. Without affecting quality of products, we can help the company save by researching the market and introducing new suppliers as well."

In fact what clinched the judges’ decision was that Hamza procures items for Rotana properties in Sudan, Iraq and Saudi Arabia, where certain products are difficult to find.
He said: "I’ve been with the hotel for the last 12 years and I like to help them. I also feel this will increase the relationship with the colleagues which will benefit Rotana as a whole."
The Hotelier Middle East Awards 2014 was held at the InterContinental Dubai Festival City. The event was supported by Du, A. Ronai, Restonic, MLA, Diversey, Arecont Vision, Canon, MMI, TCL, Horeca, Patchi, Pulsar Foodstuff Trading, Amir, and Julius Meinl.
