Speaking at the recent Hotelier Middle East Sustainable Design and Operations Summit, Dubai Dubai Municipality senior civil engineer – building department – qualifications & building studies section Eng. Salim Mohammad Zid outline the Dubai Plan 2021 for a smart and sustainable city.

Dubai Plan 2021 describes the future of Dubai through holistic and complementary perspectives that are divided into six themes, each highlighting a group of development aims for the emirate.

One of the key areas of development include plans for a sustainable city, which the Dubai Municipality will lead through an institutional framework, research and development, and incentive programmes.

Zid explained how the Demand Side Management (DSM) strategy is founded on eight DSM programmes, and supported by eight implementation methods, which include building regulations, building retrofits, district cooling, standards and labels for appliances and equipment, water reuse and efficient irrigation, outdoor lighting, change of tariff rates, and demand response.

Zid also revealed approximately 75% of electricity consumption in the last year was by commercial and residential buildings. Targets for green building regulations include a 20% reduction of CO2, 15% water savings, and 20% energy savings.

More than 120 designers, architects, hoteliers, and regulators attended the Hotelier Middle East Sustainable Design & Operations Summit on June 3 at Grosvenor House, Dubai. 

The event was held in partnershith Farnek, Honeywell, and the Emirates Green Building Council.
