Qatar Tourism Authority has renewed its hotel grading system to include rooms, staff development, F&B and environmental sustainability assessments.
Qatar Tourism Authority (QTA) has announced a new classification system for hotels, which, among other new categories, will include an environmental sustainability element.
The tourism authority has stated the system will also monitor public areas, guest rooms, guest bathrooms, staff development, and food and beverage services.
Hotels and hotel apartments will be graded with the same ‘star-rating’ system, and properties that do not implement the required improvements will face regrading, possibly to a lower star rating.

Hotels will be given until December 31 2020 to complete the changes before they are regraded under the new system.
Developers of hotels that are in the pipeline for 2016 must ensure that standards are in place before any new establishments open.
Authorities have provided a digital ‘self-assessment’ module online to help developers understand what is required.
In a statement, QTA announced: “Uniquely, this new system holds developers, owners, management and operators equally accountable for the property’s classification.
“Changes will take time, but gradually we are paving the way for a more sustainable, environmentally-friendly, and diverse hospitality sector.
“The system, which aims to make hotel ratings more fair and transparent, was released this month after two months of testing and six of development in collaboration with the local industry, hoteliers and international experts.”
