US restaurant chain California Tortilla launched three more outlets in Qatar in January 2016 and plans to open 17 additional franchises in the GCC region over the next five years.

The restaurants, which operate in the fast casual sector, are opening under the management of master franchisee Roots for Hospitality & Services, LLC.

"The growth of California Tortilla in Qatar is a testament to the acceptance of our brand in the Middle East,” commented Bob Phillips, president of California Tortilla.

He added: “We look forward to continued success in international franchising through our partnership with Roots for Hospitality, a leader in the Middle East’s burgeoning food and hospitality industry.”

Simon A. Nehme, co-owner of Qatar's California Tortilla branches at Salwa Road, Jeryan Al Meera Mall, 01 Mall and at The Pearl Qatar, said he is "excited to open our fourth International location" and described Qatar as "a growing, dynamic and quality-driven market".

The food at the Qatar outlets is prepared using the same recipes as in the US but modifications have been made to meet cultural tastes and pork has been replaced by blackened shrimp, the company said in a statement.

The Qatar branches also serve up smoothies and ice cream, which are not offered at US California Tortilla locations.
