Demand from medical tourists in Dubai results in hiring boom as figures reveal year-on-year growth in the sector.

Dubai’s healthcare sector witnessed an increase in medical tourist arrivals from 135,000 in 2014 to 150,000 in 2015, according to recent employment data.

Of the 2,900 healthcare facilities available in Dubai, 1,400 were used by medical tourists last year.

“The DHA [Dubai Healthcare Authority] expects this statistic to increase to 170,000 medical tourists in 2016, with revenues of about US $300 million,” said Monster.com India, Middle East, South East Asia and Hong Kong managing director Sanjay Modi.

Modi suggested tourists travelling to the emirate for medical reasons were coming predominantly from within the UAE, the GCC, Asia and Europe.

“Dubai Healthcare Authority has in recent years been promoting the emirate as a medical tourism hub, and I expect more investment in this industry to further stimulate the job market,” added Modi.

According to a survey conducted by Dubai Healthcare City (DHCC), 80% of medical tourists come to Dubai for the quality of care offered.
